ABOUT

cooking class instructor

 Junko Smyth

 Cooking Instructor

Junko was born and lived in Tokyo before coming to Perth in 1996.  She grew up in a family that ran various restaurants in Shinjuku, a centre of Tokyo and this passion for cooking has been passed down through her family.

She first worked in the hospitality industry after college, then moved to the educational field teaching Japanese to primary to high school students in Perth before returning to Japan in 2004 for 7 years.

In her daily life, she doesn’t just cook Japanese food, she cooks all sorts, Italian, Asian, BBQ etc, especially Chinese.  After having many fun cooking sessions with her friends at home, in 2017, she decided to make a change and began a career teaching Japanese cuisine to locals to share the joy of Japanese (and some Asian)cooking!

The venue is her own family kitchen, she hopes everyone enjoys a cosy homely atmosphere during the class 😊

Her focus is to teach easy day-to-day meals like the ones mum teaches her own kids at home, not sophisticated formal dishes such as traditional ‘Kaiseki’ cuisine.

You can learn how to make popular dishes from Japan, and even make some delicious meals you would have never seen on a restaurant menu before.
Some non-Japanese meals have been added to her cooking classes as they are very regular dishes cooked at home in Japan.

Cooking Sessions

Sessions run for 2.5 to 3 hours, conducted by Junko (and an assistant when more than 4 participants) at her home in Meadow Springs.
Up to 6 participants can be accommodated for most of the classes enabling them to have a very hands-on cooking experience.  Due to time restrictions and the size of our class, our sit-down meal time at the table after cooking is a bit limited.  You'll be sent home with some of the meals to share with your family/friends ☝️
Recipes will be provided.
